DIVING SITES

Diving sites

The most interesting divig site (probably not only in Cuba - according to National Geographic Magazine in the whole Caribbean) is without any doubt Jardines de la ReinaBecause of extraordinary restrict conditions of the national sea park (especially the prohibition of commercial fishing and limited number of visitors), we can see the Caribbean as well as in the time before the swing of tourist traffic in this piece of the World.

In the most of Cuban shore (excepting Jardines de la Reina) there were almost every big sea animal fished and eaten. Therefore we advise you to think over the choosing of your location properly and don´t succumb the euphemistic supplies of some travel agencies. Especially some agencies that don´t specialise in diving are sometimes prodigal of exaggeraten optimism, which is seldom real.

Excepting the diving "number one" Jardines de la Reina it worth visiting also:

(2) Cayo Largo

Tiny and narrow island in the Caribbean Sea,c. 140 km eastwards from Isla de Juventud and 200 km southeastern from Havana with an own airport. It belongs to the Canarreos islands and is less than 20 km long. It has been a symbol of deluxe and exotic holiday in the Caribbean. In November 2001 it was afflicted by Hurricane MICHAEL and it took very long time to come to life again. But thanks to the foreign investors it has taken breath again and maybe will become a new sea reservation in the future.

(3) Maria la Gorda

It is a bay in the westernmost extermity of Cuba. According with the legend, there used to be an outpost of the local pirates. A woman called Maria la Gorda (gorda= thick) used to care about them, and when she died, they sepultured her there. It is a wonderful and undemaged place with lovely diving fields, coral areas, big gorgonias and sponges, rays, barracudas, jacks, rarely also devilfish and whale-sharks. This diving site si available with FLEXI FLY & DRIVE

(4) The Bay of Pigs (we call it The Piggies Bay)

Playa Santa Lucia is a bay not far from the colonial town Puerte Principe (later renamed to Camaguey). Except lovely beaches, it is a famous place for the appearence of bullsharks, who are (according to some sources) more dangerous than the white sharks. But there are no reports about the victims at this place, so it is save to dive there. Except for the bullsharks, you can see some reachable wrecks. This diving site si available with FLEXI FLY & DRIVE

(6) Isla de la Juventud

This island is also called the Island of youth, the Island of treasure, the Island of pirates, Isla de Piňos. It is situated southeastern from Cuban sea cost. The most interesting diving locality is called Punta Francés and is situated in the southwestern extermity (it is the sea national park). There are plenty of colourful populations of corals, sponges, gorgonies, cliffs, caves, tunnels, tarpons, bar jacks, turtles, barracudas, rays and here and there some sharks.

(7) Varadero

Varadero is well known as a tourist capital city of Cuba - it is said, that the big maffian boss Al Capone used to spend there his holiday .There is situated a great deal of wrecks northwards of the island( Soviet rocket ship Barca Patrulero, German´s corporation ship wreck sunken in the 1944 or the An-24 wreck). It is also the cheapest place, where you can enjoy your draughts. There is one of the Cuban hyperbaric chambers too. Varadero si available with FLEXI FLY & DRIVE

(8) Santiago de Cuba

One of the most interesting place there is a wreck of Spanish admiral ship Colón, sunken together with the whole Spanish flotilla in the 1898 by the American navy. It lies at a depth of 7-37 meters and is considered to be the one of the most beautiful Caribbean wrecks. This wreck is situated c. 60 km westwards of Santiago and is reachable also from the coast. The only one disadvantage is that there is no diving outpost far and near. This diving site si available with FLEXI FLY & DRIVE
